Marieke van Doorn
Marieke van Doorn is currently working for the European Partnership
for Democracy as the Head of Programmes. She is a Dutch national and a political scientist
by training. Previously she has worked as a
researcher and consular employee at the Dutch Embassy in Rabat, Morocco, right
after the autocratic reign of King Hassan II had come to an end. Upon return to
Holland, she got involved in the
establishment phase of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (www.nimd.org). The NIMD supports the development
of political parties as crucial actors in democratization processes, and she got the opportunity to facilitate the set-up
of multi-party support programmes in various African countries. Furthermore Marieke coordinated a network of European
democracy support NGOs pushing for the establishment of a joint hub in
Brussels. The idea of establishing EPD was born to strengthen existing European
efforts in democracy assistance across the globe. Marieke
published & edited various volumes and articles on this topic. Since early
2008 she served as the founding Coordinator
of EPD, establishing the Secretariat in Brussels. Currently EPD works on
increasing the European support for the struggle for democracy of the peoples
in Egypt, Georgia, Moldova, Armenia,
Zimbabwe, Ghana and Burma.
