Event: DEMOCRACY IN MOLDOVA: A SECOND CHANCE!

On Monday Jul 20th, 2009 ALDE group of the European Parliament organized an event on the situation in Moldova in the light of upcoming early elections to be held on July 29th 2009. Over 80 people gathered on this occasion to hear some of the voices coming from Moldova commenting on the current political situation in Moldova which is part of both the European Neighborhood Policy and Eastern Partnership - two significant policies of the EU towards its neighboring countries. Please see the program of the event here.

The event was co-chaired by MEPs Mr. Hans van Baalen and Mr. Christian Busoi who both expressed their support to democratic forces in Moldova and their expectations that early elections will be held in more free and fair mode. Representatives of Moldovan civil society - Mr. Victor Arama from tundefinedhe Association of victims from Cahul, Ms.  Alina Radu, journalist from "Ziarul de Garda" Chişinău,  and Ms. Nadine Gogu from independent journalist center - summarized both the events of April 2009 when peaceful demonstrations of mainly young people in Chisinau were violently suppressed and also the current election campaign which is still marked by deficiencies. Dr. Marcin Walecki, Executive Director of the European Partnership for Democracy had a brief summary about the current elections campaign as well, please read his speech here.

In the second half of the event a representative of Mission of Republic of Moldova to the European Union, Mr. Iulian Groza, was answering to some of questions and comments posed by the speakers and also questions from the audience.
