Nigerois President Dissolves, Increases Size Of Parliament

President Mamadou TANDJA on July 8 dissolved Parliament and called for elections to an enlarged body on August 20. The new bicameral legislature will include a 113-member House of Representatives and a 60-member Senate. TANDJA’s unilateral dissolution of Parliament is a response to that body’s refusal to authorize a referendum on whether he should be allowed to seek a third term in November. The referendum will go forward on August 4, in contravention of a constitutional court ruling.
