Revitalising Democracy Assistance. FRIDE.
Despite claims to the contrary, demand for democracy is on the rise. In recent years, democracy assistance has increased but its results have been far from impressive. Actors in recipient countries ask donors to adapt support to local needs and better to link assistance policies to political reform. A new FRIDE project on "Revitalising Democracy Assistance" offers advice on how to improve both donor and local stakeholder practices. FRIDE, in collaboration with the World Movement for Democracy, asked nearly 600 civil society representatives across 13 countries their opinion on how democracy aid should be re-energised. The result is the first comprehensive analysis on democracy assistance worldwide. It includes 13 in-depth country case studies, based on the views of local democracy stakeholders from countries which include Nigeria, Ghana, DRC and Kenya.
