The EU’s democratic dilemma in Ukraine
"The European Union has cancelled this week’s visit by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych as a signal of its disapproval of last week’s conviction of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko. While some suggest the Orange Revolution leader’s imprisonment was a mix-up “characteristic of authoritarian regimes,” others highlight the EU’s geo-political dilemma in trying to defend democracy in Ukraine without pushing Kyiv into Russia’s autocratic orbit following Vladimir Putin’s recent announcement of a new Eurasian Federation of former Soviet states."
