20 years of democratic renewal in Eastern Europe
The EPD's partner organisation, the Policy Association for an Open Society (PASOS), is organising a gathering of
young civic leaders from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and the Slovak
Republic, and democracy and human rights campaigners from EU Eastern
Partnership countries, with representatives of the European Commission,
European Council, European Parliament, and EU member governments to be held in Prague on 10 December on the
occasion of International Human Rights Day and to mark 20 years since the end of
the Cold War and the end of communist rule in Central Europe. Read more here.
EPD Launches Fellowship Programme
In October 2009 the EPD will start
a new fellowship programme at its Brussels headquarters in partnership with its sister organisations from the Czech Republic. The programme will give people
working in organisations in the field of democracy assistance the opportunity
to experience working at the nerve-centre of European decision making and strengthen ties between EPD and its partners. Read more here.
Cuba refuses to issue visa for German MP Markus Meckel
The Cuban government has refused to issue a visa for Markus Meckel, Member of the Bundestag and Deputy Foreign Policy Spokesperson of the SPD Parliamentary Group and Member of the Board of EPD. Meckel had planned to visit Cuba between July 5 and 12 and to meet with representatives of the government as well as of the pro-democracy opposition, churches and civil society. More info.
